Old Business

a) City of Champaign Use of Force Policy Carol Inskeep gave the committee an update. The policy was changed by Chief Finney, effective October 1, 2009; the city council does not need to approve such policies. The policy covers the use of tasers but not when to call other agencies to bring their tasers. Esther discussed the continuum of resistance and response used by other police departments. The state police investigation report has not been released by the State's Attorney yet.

b) Political science intern

Matthew Miller, who will graduate in May, will work with the steering committee, under the supervision of Carol Leff.

c) Safe Schools Alliance

The forum is being shown on UPTV. The group is planning a professional training with the help of the Chicago Safe Schools Alliance.

New Business

a) Collaboration with Quakers to educate youth about police interactions. The steering committee agreed to do this, starting with middle schools.

b) U of I parking policy: there is no further information.

c) Appointment of awards and nominating committees Esther will send out an e-mail asking for volunteers.

Marsha will contact the State's Attorney's office to ask when the report on the Carrington shooting will be released.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05
