Present: Bill Brown, Susan Cohen, Mary Cory, , David Gehrig, Ward Henson, Carol Inskeep,

 Stan Levy, Esther Patt, Stephen Portnoy, Lynne Rudasil, Richard Schnuer, Shirley Stillinger, Marsha Woodbury

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by the chair, Esther Patt.  The  minutes of the September meeting were approved as distributed.

 

Old Business

 

a) The October 16 program at the Champaign Public Library

Cards have been mailed out to the membership and Carol Inskeep brought flyers to be distributed.  Marsha will go to the library at 6:30 that night to insure set-up.

 

b) Fall gathering, Sunday, November 16, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

At Richard’s home, 2303 Savannah Dr.  Directions will be in the newsletter.

 

c) Fall newsletter

Deadline for submissions is October 17

Gather at Shirley’s at 3:00, Saturday, October 25, to help compile newsletters.          

 

d) First Amendment celebration committee at the U of I

            Esther contacted Steve Helle, an ACLU member who is on the committee; he felt  that the committee is “benign.”

There is a forum Friday, October 10 on the recent ethics rules; Esther will attend and report

 

New Business

 

a) U of I ethics rules

Esther described her contacts with the Chicago division; that office se­nt a letter to President Joseph White today, asking for a response by October 6.

There was extensive discussion on this topic.

 

b) High school students knowledge of the Constitution

There was discussion but no ideas for remediation

 

Esther announced that Hiram Paley is willing to be the committee’s representative to the ACLU board meetings in Chicago.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
