AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION of Champaign County Steering Committee November 4, 2004 Present: Bill Brown, Brian Issleb, Esther Patt, Gary Peters, Carol Spindel, Shirley Stillinger Student chapter: Maeve Anderson, Vinay Tota Absent with notice: Roger Clark, Susan Cohen, Stuart Laird, Allan Levy, Stan Levy, Rocky Maffit, Stephen Portnoy, Steve Shoemaker, Kirstin Solberg The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by Bill Brown, vice-chair. The minutes were approved as distributed, with the addition of the name of Nick Lampson as present. TreasurerÕs report: Ward reported total assets of $1,933.47. Assignments were made for the fall gathering on Sunday. The marriage equality forum being arranged by Mary Dixon will be at 7:00 p.m., December 2 at the Champaign Public Library. Since this is our regular meeting night, our December meeting will be postponed to December 9. There was discussion about unconvicted inmates in the Champaign County Jail--that is, people awaiting trialÐbeing able to vote. Bill has talked to the County Clerk and to the Illinois Division about this. He and Shirley will try to meet with the clerk and the sheriff. Bill will call Mary Dixon about the UniversityÕs receiving a donation for a scholarship based on the religion of the recipient. There was a meeting tonight on creating citizen review boards for local police department. We will find out what the outcome of that meeting is. Student Chapter: Maeve reported that the students had been busy on studentsÕ rights education: they ran a half-page ad in the D.I. at no cost they distributed flyers all over campus Josh sent an e-mail, with the help of Stan Levy, to all U of I students The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Shirley Stillinger
